The Times Are A Changin'

" The times are a changin' " is something we hear people say every day and there is even a ballad (Bob Dylan, 1964) recorded with the same title. It seems every day the "times change", our computers get faster, our personal time shrinks faster and our corespondence needs to be done faster.

Of course, a day still consists of 24 hours, we still type very slowly compared to computers, and correspondence still requires thought. It's not unsual for people to become agitated if they have not received a reply to an email sent only half an hour ago; a far cry from the days when our correspondence was done mainly via post.

In todays 24 x 7 world our correspondence is more likey to be conveyed electronically over the internet as email, as in any other means.

THE RELEVANCE OF GAMING TO BUSINESS.

In today’s modern world, advanced graphics are no longer confined to the gamer. As windows vista demonstrates graphics power is now a requirement to run the computers Graphical User Environment. Not only do more and more companies require to manipulate high-end graphics, they need to do so as quickly as possible. These powerful tools are becoming more and more mainstream, but can your machine cope. In May 2008 NVIDIA, (one of the 2 world leading graphics specialist) demonstrated a 442 million-pixel image being manipulated in real time. However, this was not for a new game, instead it was the preview of the next version of Adobe Photoshop! Yes, the world famous photo editing suite from adobe, and the dramatic speed improvement's were due mostly to the graphics card not the main CPU.

This is why we believe it is important for our customers that we at Merlin understand what’s occurring at the “sharp end”, and for us that’s games like Assassins Creed, Crysis and simulators like Microsoft’s Flight Sim X.

BUSINESS EXAMPLE

Requirement:
Mz Z required to while some time away whilst waiting for a reply to her trans Atlantic calls, late at night. She always wanted to fly, had tried old versions of flight sim but had always been put off by the stuttering slowness on her machine.

Merlin Solution:
We implemented a new system. Instead of purchasing a new server, we relegated her old machine to be that server, using open source non-demanding software. And instead of supplying a new server we supplied a new workstation pc. This Pc was specified as a low end gaming machine, instead of a standard business workstation. She was very pleasantly surprised to see that in day-to-day business use this machine proved significantly faster than the one it replaced, and commented on how much easier her day-to-day life had become. OOH and she also loved the smooth playing on flight sim. (So much so she actually purchased a full flight yoke and pedals to enhance her gaming experience!!)
